Hello Parents,
It is always my first priority to keep you informed about what is affecting our school. I want to address the facts about the new “Busing for Desegregation” proposal. This new proposal is designed to eliminate busing for desegregation in the Wichita Public schools. If the board approves busing for desegregation purposes will be discontinued effective with the 2008-09 school year. Samuel E. Spaght is a neighborhood magnet school. Commencing with the 2008-09 school year, all students will be allowed to attend their neighborhood school. This includes neighborhood magnet schools, but excludes pure magnet schools. A strong magnet school program will be maintained by the Wichita Public schools in order that families will continue to have school choice. The neighborhood magnet program will maintain to ensure that families will continue to have choices. We are a neighborhood magnet school in the “Area” and we will continue to operate under the same format designed by the Magnet school office. Priority magnet placement will be given in 2008-09, if space is available, to students bused for desegregation reasons in the 07-08 school year. Priority placement will be given to students who reside in our “Area” subject to space availability. It is important for you to know that if you are in our “Area” and you live less than 2.5 miles away from our school or any school in the “Area” you will not receive transportation. Beginning in 2009-10, all students in the original/ peripheral AAA will receive priority magnet placement, if space is available. This choice will continue until such time as school capacity issues have been addressed in this area. Please know that the Spaght staff cherishes having your child in our school. As we move into our new Multi-media magnet theme the students will have new and engaging ways to receive the education they need. This is the beginning of a major shift in Wichita Public schools and our focus at Spaght will be to continue to do what we do everyday and that is teach children. “It’s about educating kids”. If you need more information please make sure you stop by the office for further details. Please note that if your child is in Pre-k or if you have friends or family that’s interested in attending Spaght they must achieve magnet status. On February 26th at the “Choices Fair” we will present our new “Multi-media magnet theme and applications will be available apply.
